Reel Youth (www.reelyouth.ca/)
Reel Youth is a Canadian non-profit organization that works with youth and adults to building community connections, and teach the skills of filmmaking (Reel Youth, 2016).
Reel Youth uses digital media to engage youth in telling stories. They run many programs including video production, photography, broadcasting and the intergenerational film program. Students from my school recently had the opportunity to participate in the intergenerational film program. Teens visited local retirement homes and worked with mentors to interview and record residents. They then learned and used editing skills to create short movies about their subject. The project is called "Age is More".
Projects like "Age is More" use technology to create real-world impact. Young people get the opportunity to make connections with seniors who they would probably never normally have met. They then get the opportunity to share their new insight and connection with the world. This is yet another way that storytelling can build empathy and understanding.
